The Science of Dunking
How high is the rim?
A regulation NBA and FIBA basketball rim stands exactly 10 feet (305 cm) above the ground. To dunk effectively, you don't just need to touch the rim; you need to clear it.
Clearance Needed
- 0 inches: Touch the rim.
- 6 inches: Basic dunk (ball over rim).
- 10+ inches: Power dunks & windmills.
How to Measure Your Vertical Jump
- Measure Standing Reach: Stand flat-footed against a wall. Reach one arm as high as possible. Mark the highest point your fingertips touch.
- Measure Jump Reach: From a standing start (no run-up for standing vert, or with approach for max vert), jump as high as possible and touch the wall (or Vertec).
- Calculate: Subtract your Standing Reach from your Jump Reach. This is your vertical jump.
SEO Tip: Why use this calculator?
Knowing your exact metrics helps you program plyometric training. Whether you are 5'8" or 6'6", understanding the gap between your current touch and the 10-foot rim is the first step to becoming a high flyer.
